A2 How to use “gustar” (me gusta)

advertisement

Gustar literally means “to be pleasing”, so the thing you like is the subject. It feels backwards at first.

Me gusta el café.I like coffee. (lit. coffee is pleasing to me)
Me gustan los libros.I like books.
¿Te gusta bailar?Do you like to dance?
No le gusta el frío.He/she doesn’t like the cold.

The pattern

Use gusta for one thing (or a verb) and gustan for plural things. The person who likes is shown by me, te, le, nos, os, les. Same pattern: encantar (to love), interesar, molestar.
