B1 The present subjunctive — an introduction
advertisement
The subjunctive isn’t a tense but a “mood” — it appears after expressions of wish, emotion, doubt and the unknown, almost always after que.
Forming it
Start from the yo form of the present, drop the -o, and add the “opposite” endings: -ar verbs take -e endings, -er/-ir verbs take -a endings.
| hablar → hable, hables, hable… | |
| comer → coma, comas, coma… | |
| vivir → viva, vivas, viva… |
When to use it (WEIRDO)
Wishes, Emotions, Impersonal expressions, Recommendations, Doubt/denial, Ojalá.
| Quiero que vengas. | I want you to come. |
| Es importante que estudies. | It’s important that you study. |
| Ojalá llueva. | I hope it rains. |
