A2 Saber vs Conocer — two ways to “know”

advertisement

Both saber and conocer mean “to know”, but they’re used differently.

Saber — facts and how to do things

Sé la respuesta.I know the answer.
¿Sabes nadar?Do you know how to swim?
No sé dónde está.I don’t know where it is.

Conocer — people and places (to be familiar with)

Conozco a María.I know María.
¿Conoces Madrid?Do you know / have you been to Madrid?

Rule of thumb: saber + a fact or + infinitive; conocer + a person or place. Conjugate saber and conocer.
