A2 Saber vs Conocer — two ways to “know”
advertisement
Both saber and conocer mean “to know”, but they’re used differently.
Saber — facts and how to do things
| Sé la respuesta. | I know the answer. |
| ¿Sabes nadar? | Do you know how to swim? |
| No sé dónde está. | I don’t know where it is. |
Conocer — people and places (to be familiar with)
| Conozco a María. | I know María. |
| ¿Conoces Madrid? | Do you know / have you been to Madrid? |
Rule of thumb: saber + a fact or + infinitive; conocer + a person or place. Conjugate saber and conocer.
